Arsenal FC news: Arsene Wenger admits his concern after striker Danny Welbeck suffers knee injury in draw with Manchester City

Arsene Wenger has admitted he is concerned over Danny Welbeck after the striker suffered an injury in Arsenal's 2-2 draw with Manchester City

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has confessed his fears over the extent of striker Danny Welbeck's injury.

The England international was forced off in the 24th minute of the 2-2 draw with Manchester City, and Wenger has confirmed the issue is with his knee.

Suffering an injury at this stage of the campaign leaves his place in Roy Hodgson's squad for the 2016 European Championship finals in doubt, particularly with the 23-man team to be announced on Thursday.

"It's a knee problem," Wenger told talkSPORT, "I hope it's not big – hopefully it's not a meniscus tear – but we have to wait until he has a scan".

Welbeck, who only returned from a 10-month lay-off following an injury to the other knee in February, is due to undergo a scan on Monday.

Roy Hodgson will be anxiously waiting for news of his fitness, with the 25-year-old regarded as a key part of the Three Lions squad.

Wenger added: "At half-time I looked at him and he was very down, so he must have pain. Let's hope we have good news from the scan.

"The good news is that he will not be out for the Euros and bad news is that he is out for the Euros, but I don't know. I don't know if it is a lateral meniscus.

"I am an optimist, but let's wait until we have a real good diagnosis."

In more positive news, Welbeck was replaced by the returning Jack Wilshere, who is widely expected to travel to France despite his appearance today being only his second of the campaign.

"He [Wilshere] has shown he is prepared, he still needs this kind of intensity in the games to get completely back to his best, but overall it was a very encouraging performance," said Wenger of the midfielder.
