Exclusive – Sheringham: Gerrard could play right-back against Poland

Former England striker Teddy Sheringham reckons Steven Gerrard should be considered as a replacement for right-back Kyle Walker against Poland.
Walker is suspended for the crucial qualifier, which England must win to guarantee qualification to next year’s World Cup. Phil Jones and Chris Smalling are the contenders to play, but Sheringham, who won 51 caps for the national side, explained to talkSPORT's Sunday Exclusive the merits of playing the Liverpool and Three Lions skipper there.
“You could always put Steven Gerrard there because then you’ve got delivery coming from the right back, which might be essential.
“We’ve got great delivery from the left in Baines and with Gerrard [on the right], it might release Wilshere or Carrick to play, then you’ve got someone threading a lovely ball through from that position as well.”
And Sheringham, who was a member of the England side that drew with Italy in Rome to reach France ’98, said he’s sure the current charges will get the job done at Wembley.
“I’m fully confident the boys will do it because there’s enough quality on the pitch and it looks like we have enough to take us through.”
