Sergio Reguilon joins Tottenham in £28m deal despite Manchester United interest as Real Madrid insert buy-back clause

Tottenham have signed Sergio Reguilon in a permanent transfer from Real Madrid, the Premier League club have confirmed.

Reguilon, the left-back, was the subject of much transfer interest this summer following his excellent loan spell at Sevilla last season, which culminated with winning the Europa League last month.

Chelsea considered Reguilon before signing Leicester's Ben Chilwell whilst a move to Manchester United also appeared to be on the cards, with trusted transfer insider claiming Reguilon wanted to join the Red Devils this summer.

But Spurs swooped in and wrapped up a deal for the recently debuted Spain international, 23, with the north Londoners paying Real Madrid around £28million (€30m) for the left-back.

The LaLiga club have insisted on a £41.25million (€45m) buy-back clause, though.

The club revealed the signing on Twitter on Saturday, quote tweeting a message by Reguilon from seven years ago.

Manchester United were unwilling to agree to such clauses which caused negotiations between the Red Devils and Real Madrid to break down and allow Spurs to jump to the front of the queue for Reguilon.

This latest transfer woe has frustrated Manchester United fans who have seen their beloved club struggle in the summer market.

While Donny van de Beek arrived at Old Trafford from Ajax in a £40m transfer, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has so far failed to recruit any other new signings.

Jadon Sancho is the most high-profile United target who still remains with his current club, Borussia Dortmund, but Nathan Ake, Dayot Upamecano and Jack Grealish have all been linked with the Red Devils but not moved to Old Trafford; Ake left Bournemouth for United's rivals Man City, while Upamecano and Grealish signed new contracts with RB Leipzig and Aston Villa respectively.

Finally, United also look set to miss out on long-term target Gareth Bale who appears close to sealing a return to English football, with Tottenham just happening to be the club also beating the Red Devils to the Welshman's signature.
