Adrian Durham has had some pretty wild opinions over the years - but this one might be one of the boldest.

Our very own Drivetime host has made the claim that Tammy Abraham is better than Kai Havertz.

The Blues spent over £70m on German attacker Havertz earlier this summer and he hit a hat-trick in the cup win over Barnsley on Wednesday.

But Durham has insisted that Frank Lampard already has a superior attacker on his books already – and he cost the Blues nothing.

He said: “Tammy Abraham is better than Kai Havertz. He’s older than Kai Havertz - but there’s not a lot in it.

“And I am looking at Havertz - yes he got a hat-trick last night and it does count - but he’ll need time to settle in the Premier League.

“He’s taken the no.9 last weekend [against Liverpool], been dragged off at half-time.

“They’ve got a guy, their top scorer from last season, sitting around and waiting for a chance and they’re trying to embed a player in who hasn’t even looked the part so far.

“Can anybody really categorically say to me, and back it up with real reasons, Kai Havertz is definitely better than Tammy Abraham? What evidence is there?”

As ever, they are bold claims from Durham, but how do the two players compare?

Abraham led the line for the Blues for the majority of the 2019/20 season and hit 15 goals in 35 Premier League appearances. He also provided three assists over the campaign.

Havertz, meanwhile, scored less goals (12) but doubled Abraham's assist tally last campaign (6).

However, the Germany star is not an out and out forward, though he was regularly deployed as a false nine by Leverkusen.

One of the main reasons that Lampard sought to bring Havertz to Stamford Bridge was for his versatility as he can play anywhere across the forward line and in the no.10 role.

His hat-trick on Wednesday evening would have undoubtedly had Blues fans purring, but tougher tests than Barnsley await.
