Liverpool’s all-time home-grown XI: Gerrard, Owen, Carragher and more

Liverpool are one of the world's most historic football clubs. Glory aplenty with a whole host of legendary players tapping the 'This Is Anfield' sign before stepping on to the famous pitch. But just how good have the Reds been at bringing through their own starlets? talkSPORT looks at their home-grown players and what a team of their greatest could line up like…
Stocky goalkeeper Tommy Lawrence earned the nickname 'the Flying Pig' for his fuller physique, but this didn't stop him making 390 appearances for the Reds under Bill Shankly, winning two First Division titles and an FA Cup along the way. He also made three appearances for Scotland.
Liverpool have Chris Lawler and Ronnie Moran able to play right and left-back respectively. They both enjoyed success with the club during the 1960s, with Lawler contributing a very healthy 61 goals during the Shankly years, while Moran's football brain was such that he would go on to become a legendary coach spanning three decades.
In the middle of defence they can call on Phil Thompson, who was so sensational for the Reds throughout his 13-year spell with the club, where he went from youth team and fan on the Kop to winning seven titles, three European Cups and two UEFA Cups, captaining the Reds in the 1981 European Cup final win over Real Madrid. Jamie Carragher sits next to him in the centre after he made 737 appearances in 17 years, which saw him pick up the Champions League in their amazing 2005 triumph over AC Milan in Istanbul.
Chief among Liverpool's long-serving heroes is Ian Callaghan. It's likely no one will ever match the 857 games he played for the club and, after winning almost every trophy on offer, he is an easy pick for their home-grown XI on the right of midfield, edging out Steve McManaman, who starred in two Wembley finals for the Reds in the 1990s and was a fantastic dribbler.
On the opposite flank is the legendary Billy Liddell, who scored 228 goals for the Reds in a contribution from the left wing that spanned decades, having joined the club as a youth team player in 1939, finally finishing under Bill Shankly's management in 1961. Only Kenny Dalglish and Steven Gerrard can rival him for the title of greatest player ever to wear red.
Despite not being a 'top, top player,' in Sir Fergie's eyes, captain fantastic Gerrard continues to be the midfield heartbeat at Anfield. He has played more than 600 times for Liverpool since his debut back in 1998 and has won numerous trophies, scoring in every major cup final, including that famous 2005 Champions League win. Sammy Lee partners him thanks to his ability with the ball at his feet, tireless running and tenacity during 10 years at Anfield.
If you wanted to pick two of the best English strikers of the Premier League era, then it's likely Michael Owen and Robbie Fowler will be on that list. Incredibly, both of them came through the ranks at Liverpool and they can pair up to make a fearsome duo full of pace and precision finishing.
