Two full-time whistles and a new Premier League record: Brighton somehow lose to Manchester United in unbelievable five-goal thriller
Manchester United scored a 100th-minute penalty after the full-time whistle was blown as Brighton somehow lost 3-2 in a five-goal thriller on Saturday.
The Seagulls, who had 18 shots and hit the woodwork five times to set a new Premier League record, thought they had finally got their reward when Solly March equalised in the fourth-minute of stoppage time.
But Neal Maupay, the man who put Brighton in front from the spot, handled in the box in the dying seconds, before VAR intervened after the final whistle had already gone.
Having already chalked off a Man United goal and overturned a Brighton penalty, VAR correctly gave Bruno Fernandes the chance to win the game for United with the last kick - which he duly took.
Maupay went from hero to zero, having started this incredible five-goal thriller with a stunning Panenka penalty.
It gave Graham Potter's side a deserved lead but the scores were level again within minutes.
A set-piece for Manchester United from the left found Nemanja Matic at the back post and he turned the back across goal and into the path of Harry Maguire who, while entangled with Lewis Dunk, was able to force his opponent to nudge into his own net.

Marcus Rashford and Mason Greenwood had goals disallowed due to offside, but the technology did work in United's favour eventually.
Aaron Connolly was adjudged to have dived under pressure from Paul Pogba, then Rashford went and scored a stunning solo goal to put United in front.
March finally found the net for Brighton in the last minute of stoppage time, but even that wasn't enough to snatch a point as there was more drama to follow.
VAR intervened to punish Maupay after the final whistle had gone, and Mat Ryan was sent the wrong way to round off perhaps the most unlucky defeat ever in the Premier League.
