Manchester United’s dreadful recent record signing South American players as Edinson Cavani and Alex Telles arrive at Old Trafford

What was looking like a stale transfer window for Manchester United suddenly kicked into life on deadline day.
After weeks of negotiations, Porto star Alex Telles, a highly rated full-back who's known for his attacking prowess, finally arrived.
But the big one was the signing of former Paris Saint-Germain and Napoli striker Edinson Cavani.
The 33-year-old, who has 341 goals in his club career, joins United on a free transfer and bolsters their options in attack.
There will be disappointment at not signing Jadon Sancho but acquiring Cavani and Telles should excite United fans nonetheless.
Cavani's acquisition has been given Ryan Giggs' blessing, the United legend hailing the player's work rate which will stand him in good stead at Old Trafford.
However, some fans will be wary of their suspect track record when signing South American players, with talkSPORT's Simon Jordan claiming this deal reminds him of the time United signed Radamel Falcao.
And marvelbet369.com has taken a look at Man United's South American signings since Ed Woodward became the executive vice-chairman at Old Trafford in the summer of 2013.
A low key start in the transfer market under Woodward's guidance - Marouane Fellaini was the Red Devils' high-profile signing.
United were ambitious, however, deals to sign Cristiano Ronaldo, Gareth Bale, Cesc Fabregas and Thiago Alcantara fell through.
But one deal they did get done was Varela from Uruguayan club Penarol.
The diehard United fans will remember him but most football fans won't as his time at Old Trafford was not memorable at all. Varela made eleven appearances in four years at Old Trafford.
The following summer saw Woodward go on a South American signing splurge, buying three players from the continent.
Argentina defender Rojo was signed for £16million as he helped his nation reach the 2014 World Cup final.
He's won an FA Cup, a League Cup and Europa League with the Red Devils but he struggled to make a name for himself at the club mainly due to persistent injuries.
Rojo tried to join Everton in the summer of 2019 but the move failed to materialise. Barring some very late business, he's expected to see out the final year of his Man United contract where he's not likely to be nowhere near the first-team fold.
There was huge excitement when Rojo's national team colleague, Di Maria, joined from Real Madrid in the same summer.
It all seemed so justified when in one of his first matches, Di Maria scored a lovely chip at Leicester. That was probably his best moment in a United shirt and he left for Paris Saint-Germain a year later.
Di Maria wasn't hated when playing for United but there's bad blood between the player and Red Devils fans these days.
The winger's wife has been quoted describing Manchester as a 's*******', while he was heard telling the Old Trafford faithful to 'f*** off' when celebrating a goal against United for PSG in a Champions League tie in the 2018/19 season.
But perhaps the biggest disappointment of that crazy summer was Falcao, who like Di Maria, also lasted a season at Old Trafford.
The Colombian hotshot was signed on loan from Monaco but United felt no need to try and extend that as he scored just four goals in 29 appearances.
It certainly wasn't the same Falcao who scored left, right and centre when at Atletico Madrid, having suffered a cruciate ligament rupture in January 2014.
Falcao went to Chelsea on loan the following season but wasn't much better if that's any consolation to Man United fans.
At the time, goalkeeper Romero was known as the 'world's best no.2' after his exploits helped Argentina reach the World Cup final.
He was duly signed in 2015 to be David de Gea's understudy and that's exactly what he's been for the last six years.
Romero does boast impressive stats - 27 clean sheets in 61 matches - but many of them will have come in the League Cup or Europa League group games.
He seems keen to get out of United and Everton were keen on him. It didn't happen, which provoked an angry reaction from his wife.
United moved Heaven and Earth (and offered him £505,000-a-week wages) to beat rivals Manchester City to the signing of Sanchez from Arsenal.
However, they'll wish they hadn't gone to such lengths given his stay can only be deemed disastrous as he scored just five goals in 45 appearances for United.
The finally managed to sell him this summer, Sanchez joined Inter Milan after spending last season on loan with the Italian club.
There's clearly no love lost between United and Sanchez, though. The 31-year-old recently claimed he tried to get his United contract ripped up after ONE day of training.
It's hard to assess Fred's time at Man United so far. In his first season, the £47m man was a laughing stock for his bad displays.
However, he improved dramatically in 2019/20 but lost his place in the first-team following Bruno Fernandes' arrival in January.
Fred hasn't started any of United's Premier League matches this season and with Donny van de Beek signing earlier this summer, it's hard to see the Brazilian having much of a future there.
