Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea defended by Spain boss after latest error – ‘Blaming him is an obsession’
Spain boss Luis Enrique has leapt to the defence of David De Gea following his latest mistake while on international duty, claiming that its become an 'obsession' blaming him.
The Manchester United goalkeeper came in for heavy criticism following his country's shock 1-0 defeat at the hands of Ukraine on Tuesday night.
De Gea was in no-mans land as Viktor Tsygankov struck 14 minutes from time to seal a historic win.
And speaking after the game, Enrique slammed the treatment that De Gea continues to receive.
"Blaming De Gea is an obsession and has become a turn on," Enrique told El Chiringuito TV.
"The responsibility for each goal belongs to the whole team. We need to improve and create more scoring chances.
"I am happy with what I have seen today, within the squad that opinion has not changed."
England legend Peter Shilton insists it’s time Dean Henderson replaced De Gea as United’s first-choice glovesman, and believes Henderson could choose to depart if he doesn’t get regular first-team football at Old Trafford.
Speaking to talkSPORT 2, the England legend said: “I think he’s made his choice, he seems to have said: ‘I’m going to stay at United and I’m ready for the big stage’.
“It’s a big club to play for, you’re under the microscope week-in, week-out as a goalkeeper.
“But with the way De Gea is playing at the moment and has been for a little while, I think maybe he’ll get his chance soon.
“And he should do, because David is not having the best of times and some of the goals that are going past him… I know he had a terrific spell at United and people will remember that and they’re probably waiting for him to come back to form.
“But I think Dean Henderson probably deserves his chance now, and De Gea probably needs a bit of a rest. He’s not in great form.
“I’m just being honest. You can only wait so long, and if you think your first choice keeper isn’t playing well and hasn’t been for a little while, when are you going to get put in?
“It can be a very frustrating time.
“If he doesn’t get in I think he probably would want to go somewhere he’s playing first-team football again.”
