Newcastle defender Fabian Schar passes to water bottle and moans to referee in Wolves draw
A water bottle frustrated Fabian Schar in Newcastle’s 1-1 draw with Wolves on Sunday.
The Magpies defender’s pass was intercepted by a rogue water bottle in the early stages of the match at Molineux.
Schar was seen complaining to referee Lee Mason, who remarkably awarded a free-kick to Newcastle!
The funny incident was similar - albeit not at all costly to Wolves - to the time when Darren Bent sealed a 1-0 win for Sunderland over Liverpool in 2009 as his shot deflected in off a beach ball.
The former England striker’s effort was heading straight at Reds goalkeeper Pepe Reina, before the beach ball, which had been thrown on to the pitch by a Liverpool fan, intervened.
Last year, explaining the goal, Bent told talkSPORT: “My first thought was always just to hit the target. If you hit the target, anything can happen and… well… look what happened!
“Liverpool fans always come up to me and say, ‘I’ve never forgiven you for scoring that beach ball goal’.
“But I’ve always said, 'what did you expect me to do?' I didn’t put it there – they threw it!
“One of their fans threw it on to the pitch, so you’ve got to blame one of your own!”
Newcastle came from behind to salvage a draw against Wolves thanks to Jacob Murphy’s 89th-minute free-kick.
Wolves took the lead through Jimenez just nine minutes before Murphy’s clever set-piece.
