Donny van de Beek will regret Manchester United move, says Dutch legend Marco van Basten after Solskjaer snub: ‘He should’ve waited and signed for another club’

Dutch legend Marco van Basten has claimed Donny van de Beek ‘should not have gone to Manchester United’ and will live to regret his Old Trafford move.

The Netherlands international midfielder left Ajax in the summer to seal a £40million move to the Red Devils, but is yet to start a Premier League match since making the switch.

The 23-year-old - who scored on his United debut - has only racked up a total of 61 minutes of league action in the club’s opening five games.

And the decision to leave Van de Beek on the bench in Saturday’s 0-0 draw with Chelsea has raised big questions over Ole Gunnar Solskjear’s use of the club’s big-money summer signing.

United legends Gary Neville and Patrice Evra questioned Van de Beek’s lack of game time on Saturday, as they watched the dull goalless stalemate at Old Trafford.

And Holland icon Van Basten also had his say, saying on Dutch TV that the young star ‘should have waited and signed for another club’, instead of jumping at the chance to earn big wages in the Premier League.

“Donny should not have gone to Manchester United,” Van Basten told Rondo.

“When you are a good player you want to play every week.

“It is really bad for a player like Donny to play only six or seven games this year. That is shocking for your match rhythm.

“I know he is earning loads and loads more than he used to. But as a top player you have to be critical and look at the chances of playing when you sign for a new club.

“Donny should have waited for better prospects and signed for another club.”

It is claimed Van de Beek earned £30,000-a-week at Ajax, but is now on around £108,000-a-week at United.

The midfielder has made just two starts since joining the club, in Carabao Cup victories against Luton and Brighton.

And United legend Neville admitted on Saturday the playing will likely now be thinking: ‘What am I doing here?’

“What is a little bit of a mystery is the use of Van de Beek since he's been signed for £40million,” said the Sky Sports pundit.

“He doesn't seem to be at the forefront of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's plans in every game.

“It's a bit of a mystery that one. And the more he doesn't start, and the more he doesn't come on, the more you're thinking, ‘Well £40m player, ordinarily you'd get him in the team’.

“He must be thinking ‘what am I doing here?’ at this moment in time.”

Evra was also watching the game for Sky and questioned why United signed the midfielder, claiming the Red Devils ‘don’t need him’.

The Frenchman added: “We're talking about Van de Beek, nothing against the kid, but why have we bought him?

“He's watching the game from the stand every game. We don't need him, that's the truth.”
