Troy Deeney’s brilliant story on how Walsall scouted him after scoring seven goals while playing hungover for amateur club

Troy Deeney recounted a hilarious story of how he was scouted by Walsall while playing hungover.
The striker has gone on to have a successful career having spent the last decade with Watford with several seasons in the Premier League.
Things could have turned out a lot differently for the 32-year-old had he decided not to play that fateful day - plenty of us would have given it a miss.
talkSPORT Breakfast host Laura Woods asked him about the story, she said: “While playing at Chelmsley Town, you scored seven goals while slightly inebriated and ended up getting scouted?”
Deeney replied: “True. My mum used to clean the house at the weekend. I went out on a Friday night with the lads.
“It was cheap drinks until 12, let’s put it that way. I was not in a position to have any of the good stuff. We had a good time. Rather hungover the next morning.
“My mum was like ‘no, out you go’. It was either walk around for two hours while she was cleaning or go play football. I played football and we are here.”
Ally McCoist loved the story but questioned the state of the opponents. He said: “I can’t imagine the condition of the opposition. They must have been partying until three o’clock."
Deeney said: “Let’s put it this way. Some of the lads were close to the over-35s league and I was an 18-year-old, very energetic guy who used to run everywhere.
“I used to play midfield then because I was more energetic than most."
Laura Woods added: “I think I speak for the majority of the nation that when we go out and have a few drinks we have things we regret. We don’t end up getting scouted and make a career out of it.”
Deeney joked: “So basically my whole career has been a mistake.”
McCoist added: “I’m going to try that in my next five-a-side performance coming up this week.”
