Watford striker Troy Deeney named Vincent Kompany as the best defender he’s ever come up against in his career.

talkSPORT host Deeney spent the past five seasons in the top-flight with the Hornets before they were relegated back to the Championship at the end of the 2019/20 campaign.

The striker has come up against the likes of Virgil van Dijk, Aymeric Laporte, Jan Vertonghen and John Terry during his time in the Premier League, but none compare to the Man City legend.

Taking part in a Q&A on talkSPORT’s Instagram account, Deeney said: “The best defender I’ve played against in my career would be Vincent Kompany.

"I think he's just a beast of a human; he’s fast, strong and a great leader.”

Kompany spent more than a decade with the Manchester club helping them to win four Premier League titles while racking up 360 appearances.

The Belgium international was arguably one of the most influential players in the English top-flight over the past decade, and he won the Premier League player of the season award in 2011/12.

He was also named in the team of the season three times, and Deeney also came up against him in the 2019 FA Cup final, when Watford were beaten 6-0 by City.

In the Q&A Deeney was also asked to name his favourite player to play with, and he picked a long-term Watford teammate who left Vicarage Road at the end of last season.

He said: “My favourite player to play with is Heurelho Gomes. It's very strange for a striker saying that about a goalkeeper.

"He’d been my vice-captain for four or five years and is a great human being.

"He had all the experience at Spurs and in the Dutch league as well.”
