Billy Gilmour’s injury comeback lasts just TEN MINUTES as Chelsea star gets bizarre red card for Scotland U21s
Billy Gilmour received a bizarre red card in Scotland’s 2-2 draw with Croatia in a European Under-21 Championship qualifier on Thursday.
The Chelsea midfielder suffered a knee injury in July which had ruled him out of action for the last four months.
He returned to training in recent weeks and made his official comeback as a second-half substitute against Croatia on Thursday night.
However, it lasted just 10 minutes as Gilmour was given his marching orders by referee Michael Fabbri.
The official blew up for Gilmour’s shoulder barge on Darko Nejasmic, which saw the 19-year-old react angrily to the decision.
And after Gilmour’s dissent, Fabbri harshly brandished a red card. It is not clear whether it was for the foul, the reaction, or perhaps both.
Scotland came back from a two-goal deficit to savage a draw thanks to strikes from Glenn Middleton and Connor McLennan.
Gilmour made 11 appearances in a breakthrough season with Chelsea last term.
Earlier this week, he vowed to force his way back into Frank Lampard’s starting XI.
He told Chelsea’s official website: “I’m enjoying it.
“It’s a great experience and great for my development to play with these world class players. There are so many trophies in there and I’m learning every day.
“It’s nice to get recognised for the good stuff. I’m going to keep working hard and continuing my form once I’m back from my injury.
“It’s going to be a hard team to get into but hopefully I’ll get more game time and experience.”
