St Mirren end Rangers’ incredible unbeaten run to delight Celtic fans and deny Steven Gerrard’s side a chance of silverware

Perhaps the most important goal of Celtic's season so far was scored on Wednesday night... by a St Mirren player.

The Bhoys were not even in action on Wednesday, but their fierce Old Firm rivals Rangers were - with Steven Gerrard's side hoping to extend their unbeaten start to the season to 28 games.

They visited St Mirren for a Scottish League Cup quarter-final hoping to record another win and move one step closer to possibly claiming silverware, but, for the first time in 2020/21, Gers were defeated.

Conor McCarthy scored an injury-time winner for Saints after Gers' Steven Davis levelled the match in the 88th minute, with Jamie McGrath also netting a brace for the hosts following Conor Goldson's early opener.

Rangers have looked imperious this year and their fans fully expected their team to march all the way to Hampden to lift their first trophy in a decade after seeing bitter rivals Celtic exit the competition in the round-of-16.

But instead it is Saints who are heading back to the national stadium for the first time since lifting the League Cup back in 2013 after becoming the first Scottish side in nine months to topple the Premiership leaders.

Celtic may already be out the League Cup, but there is no doubt the Parkhead faithful will be delighted by Wednesday's result.

It ends the Gers incredible unbeaten run, and denies Gerrard's side the chance of winning one piece of silverware this term - although they are still in the Europa League and top the Premiership by 13 points.

St Mirren's reward for becoming the first Scottish side to beat Rangers this season was being drawn for a semi-final clash against Livingston.
