‘Manchester United would be above Liverpool if they had performed at home’ – Tony Cascarino says Red Devils capable of title challenge this season

Manchester United would be ABOVE champions Liverpool in the Premier League table if it wasn't for their dreadful home form.

That’s according to Tony Cascarino, who believes the much improved Red Devils can be genuine title contenders this season.

While Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side have struggled at Old Trafford, winning just two of their seven home games in the league this term, they have been in fine fettle on the road - winning all six of their away fixtures.

In fact, that run stretches back to last season, having won ten top-flight games on the road in a row and another seeing them equal a Premier League record.

Leicester have experienced the same problem, having won just three times at the King Power Stadium this term - giving United a perceived advantage ahead of the clash.

Questions have been asked of Solskjaer throughout the season, especially after the club’s Champions League exit at the group stage, but they have clicked into gear in recent weeks and many are now tipping them for a surprise title tilt.

And Cascarino believes they are a more dangerous side than many pundits and opposition fans give them credit for.

“Man United would be top of the league today if they had any sort of home form at all,” said the talkSPORT host on the Weekend Sports Breakfast.

“Their form at home has let them down dreadfully.

“But they’re better now. They’re without a doubt a better team. They’re now playing to what we know they’re capable of .

“There have been times they’ve dropped way below the standard. They’ve got a lot of good footballers at that club, they’ve spent a hell of a lot of money, they’ve had bright youngsters come through and they’ve got two top goalkeepers challenging for that number 1 spot.

“It feels like there are fights for shirts in a lot of positions. Players are not guaranteed a place in that team.

“There’s more competition and players are playing to a better standard. They’re a dangerous team.

“I don't think they’ve got enough to get to Liverpool, I think Liverpool will get a gap on them.

“It’s still too early, because this period has four or five games that can kill your title challenge. United have got three really big games coming in the next three weeks.

“But if United go to Anfield in January and win, then you know there’s a title challenge on.

“Liverpool aren't going to drop that many points this year, so United are going to have to get a couple of big wins to be up there.”
