Exclusive – Shilton blasts Robinson’s quit decision

Former England goalkeeper Peter Shilton has criticised Paul Robinson's decision to retire from international football, and claims that representing his country obviously doesn't mean as much to him at it should.

Despite being recalled to Fabio Capello's squad for the midweek friendly against Hungary, the Blackburn stopper has decided to stand down.

And it's a decision that has left Shilton questioning the former Leeds and Tottenham star's commitment.

He told the Weekend Sports Breakfast: "If he has called it a day then maybe it shows that it doesn’t mean as much to him as it should do to pull on the England shirt. At his age, with what’s in front now, there’s no way I would have thought about retiring.

“He’s always been very talented and he’s always had a lot of natural ability but maybe the consistency side and the belief sometimes when he’s been in an England shirt hasn’t been there, and obviously that little bit of passion is not there."

England squad to face Hungary:
Goalkeepers:
Ben Foster (Birmingham), Joe Hart (Manchester City)
Defenders: Wes Brown (Manchester United), Gary Cahill (Bolton), Ashley Cole (Chelsea), Michael Dawson (Tottenham Hotspur), Kieran Gibbs (Arsenal), Phil Jagielka (Everton), Glen Johnson (Liverpool), John Terry (Chelsea)
Midfielders: Gareth Barry (Manchester City), Steven Gerrard (Liverpool), Adam Johnson (Manchester City), Frank Lampard (Chelsea), James Milner (Aston Villa), Ashley Young (Aston Villa), Theo Walcott (Arsenal), Jack Wilshere (Arsenal)
Forwards: Darren Bent (Sunderland), Carlton Cole (West Ham United), Wayne Rooney (Manchester United), Bobby Zamora (Fulham)
