Shkodran Mustafi bid farewell to Mesut Ozil ahead of his move to Fenerbahce by branding him 'the most unselfish player'.

Ozil’s time at the Gunners inched closer to being over as he flew to Turkey to sign his new contract after agreeing a seven-figure payout with the north London club.

Ozil his goodbyes at the Emirates on Saturday as he prepares to embark on the next chapter of his career.

The 31-year-old had been frozen out by Mikel Arteta having been omitted from both the Premier League and Europa League squads.

He has faced strong criticism from Arsenal fans and pundits for his supposed lack of fight in recent years, but Mustafi is a staunch supporter.

The German defender, who has also been linked with a move away from the club, appeared to suggest it was Arsenal - and not Ozil - at fault for his fellow countryman's struggles.

The centre-back wrote on Twitter: "Bro, you have been the most unselfish player on and off the pitch, I have ever shared the dressing room with.

"You will be always remembered as the #AssistKing.

"Unfortunately we as a team haven’t been able to assist you when you needed us the most. All the best."

Mustafi is not expected to be an Arsenal player much longer and is likely to leave this month.

The 28-year-old has played just 45 minutes of Premier League football this season.

The Gunners reportedly offered Mustafi a new contract but he turned them down and will become a free agent in June.

Barcelona emerged as shock contenders for his signature and could make a move in January.
