Kenny Dalglish and Marco van Basten in attack, Paul Gascoigne and Graeme Souness in midfield, and two AC Milan legends in defence… Ally McCoist’s all-time top XI is some team!

Although we now know him as the fun, bubbly and insightful host who graces our airwaves, we shouldn't forget talkSPORT's Breakfast co-host Ally McCoist had a fine football career too.

Our Ally played for over 20 years, winning 20 major trophies in that time while also scooping up a number of individual accolades, including the European Golden Shoe on two occasions.

He's one of the most prolific strikers Scotland has ever produced and by virtue has played alongside - and against - some pretty good players too.

But who are the best Ally has ever shared a pitch with?

Well, the Rangers icon joined Jonny Owen and Friends to reveal his Best XI - and it is some team!

Let's start with the defence, which contains not one but two AC Milan legends in front of Rangers' greatest ever goalkeeper.

Andy Goram is widely regarded as Rangers' best glovesman and Ally has plumped for his fellow Scot between the sticks.

In front sit Paolo Maldini and Franco Baresi, both icons of Italian football who helped make Milan such a formidable club in the 1980s and 1990s.

"Baresi was phenomenal," opined Ally. "The Italians are the only back four I ever played against that had me thinking about them, rather than the other way around.

"Baresi used to have a signal and the entire back four 'bang' moved out and you were offside. They were fantastic."

With Maldini at left-back, picked alongside Baresi at centre-back is Jurgen Kohler.

The German World Cup winner was a 'brute' but his style would have complemented the 'genius' Baresi's excellent reading of the game, Ally says.

At right-back there's another Scot - Danny McGrain. He was one of the great full-backs of his generation, and one of the finest players in Celtic's history.

As Ally put it: "I ain't scoring against that back four!"

On to the midfield and Ally has plumped for more Rangers icons with whom he enjoyed success alongside at varying times.

Davie Cooper, who tragically passed away aged just 39, occupies one of the wing positions.

"He was unbelievable - a genius of a football player," Ally says.

Paul Gascoigne and Graeme Souness take the central positions - what a tantalising partnership of skill, energy and combativeness that would have been.

"I can hear that chat before the game: 'Paul, don't worry about anything son, you just go and play. And if anybody annoys you in any way, shape or form, would you mind pointing them out to me!'"

On Souness, Ally added: "I've never played with anybody that could change a game quite like Graeme. He could make a pass, score a goal, make a tackle, he could upset the opposition, the fans. He knew how to manage a game, he knew what was needed."

And what of Gazza? "He just wanted to attack, he wanted to entertain, he wanted to score goals, he wanted to make goals, he wanted to go by people. The thing that I always remember about Gascogine was his power; he could go by people with aggression when he wanted to, he could go by them with ability when he wanted to. He was phenomenal."

Danish great Brian Laudrup, who was at Rangers for four years, completes the midfield, with Ally describing him as 'the quickest player I've seen with the ball at his feet'.

In attack, Ally was spoilt for options - highlighted by the names he left out.

Both Ian Rush and Karl-Heinz Rummenigge were namechecked but would have to settle for the bench.

The front two? A Dutchman and a Scotsman -  Marco van Basten and Kenny Dalglish.

Van Basten had his career cut short by injury and retired at 28, yet he's still recognised as one of football's best ever.

Dalglish earned legendary status at Celtic and Liverpool, winning ten league titles in his playing career and scoring over 300 goals.
