Danny Murphy is not worried that star players like Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah would leave Liverpool if they failed to qualify for the Champions League next season.

The Reds face a battle to book their place in Europe’s elite competition for the 2021/22 campaign.

They are in sixth place in the with just seven games to go, although just four points separate them and Leicester in third.

One route would also be to win the Champions League, but must overcome a 3-1 first leg deficit against Real Madrid to make the semi-final.

Former Liverpool midfielder Murphy was pessimistic of their chances to achieve a top four finish.

He told talkSPORT: “West Ham are on the crest of a wave. What is going on there? You’ve got Chelsea who are looking strong, I know you had the blip against West Brom, but they’ve got strength in depth.

“I think it could go right to the end. I don’t think they (Liverpool) will get top four.”

But Murphy believes that just one season outside the Champions League would not necessarily lead to a mass exodus of the club’s best talent.

“I don’t think it’s huge in terms of attracting players because most people who know football will probably think this is a one season blip, a very unique season in terms of the injuries and where they’re at,” Murphy added.

“In terms of the players who are there, I don’t think Mo Salah or Sadio Mane would be leaving because they don’t have Champions League football for one season.

“That’s not to say none of them will leave because if an opportunity comes up, Salah has hinted at maybe wanting to go to Spain.

“I don’t think it’s based on whether they are in the Champions League or not.”
