Chelsea told they must make a big striker signing this summer as Timo Werner ‘too erratic’ and is ‘making wrong decisions’

Chelsea need to land a 'big striker' this summer - with Timo Werner not the answer.

That's the view of former Premier League ace Gabby Agbonlahor, who believes Werner is too 'erratic' to be the main man for the Blues.

Big things were expected from Werner following his £47.6million move from RB Leipzig having scored 34 goals for the German club last season.

But the 25-year-old has been a source of frustration to many Chelsea fans this season with just 12 in all competitions from 49 games.

The German had his chances in Saturday’s FA Cup final, but failed to make the most of them.

He had four of the Blues 13 total shots as they lost 1-0 to Leicester City.

Chelsea had more than double the shots the Foxes managed, while Brendan Rodgers’ side made their one, and only, effort on target count.

Thomas Tuchel will hope Werner becomes more prolific next season but Agbonlahor has seen enough to declare he is not good enough to be Chelsea's leading striker.

“I’ve tried to give him the benefit of the doubt as it's his first season, but the more I’m seeing of him he’s making the wrong decision,” the ex-Aston Villa striker told talkSPORT.

“He picked the ball up, running at two defenders and takes a wild shot over the bar when it’s best to make a pass and another run.

“He seems a bit too erratic and Chelsea, with their history with the likes of Didier Drogba and the strikers they’ve had in the past, they need to go out and buy a big, big striker who can score goals and turn up in the big games.”

Ex-Chelsea striker Tony Cascarino, meanwhile, says Werner’s decision making has been very poor this season and he always seems to make the wrong choice.

Speaking on talkSPORT’s Weekend Sports Breakfast, Cascarino said: “He makes a lot of bad decisions for a striker. I’ve been there and know what I’m talking about on this. I did it for a period in my career. 

“My decisions were always wrong for about 18 months and couldn’t fathom how I would choose the wrong option.

“He’s doing that at the moment too regularly. For someone who can devastate with his pace, he gets in position and thinks ‘what am I going to need to do?’ Ultimately, he chooses the wrong option.”

Former Blues goalkeeper Mark Bosnich joined Cascarino and Natalie Sawyer on talkSPORT on Sunday morning and thinks that Werner needs someone alongside him to get the best out of him.

Bosnich said: “The bottom line is they did create chances, there’s no doubt about that. If it wasn’t for Kasper Schmeichel, they would have won that game.

“Going down 1-0 to a team like Leicester, who are so tactically astute and know really how to protect their goal, is a difficult thing.

“I can understand how their supporters and you are coming from. I remember when he first signed for Chelsea and remember someone saying at Leipzig he had somebody big up front with him who was more of a buffer and decoy for him, which allowed him more time and space to score.

“He hasn’t had that at Chelsea consistently.”
