Europa Conference League ‘dilutes’ football as Arsenal, Everton, Tottenham and West Ham can still qualify on final day of Premier League season

The new Europa Conference League competition ‘dilutes’ football even more, talkSPORT has been told.

The much maligned European competition is the third launched by UEFA and sits behind the Champions League and Europa League.

It is designed for those who would otherwise struggle to qualify for the two bigger tournaments.

Already qualified are the likes of Union Berlin, Rubin Kazan, Vitesse, Trabzonspor and Villarreal, who will escape should they win this season’s Europa League as they face Manchester United in the final.

The Premier League team that finishes seventh on the final day of the season will also go into the competition next season, with Tottenham currently occupying the spot.

But final day results could see Spurs miss out, with Arsenal, Everton and West Ham other possible qualifiers for the new competition.

The place was due to go to the winner of the Carabao Cup, but as that was Man City it will pass on to the side who finish just outside the Europa League places.

The overall winner will earn a place directly into the following season’s Europa League.

Former Chelsea and Marseille striker Tony Cascarino is not a fan of the Europa Conference League and claimed it ‘dilutes’ the game.

“When I heard it, I didn’t even bother to look at what it entails,” said the Weekend Sports Breakfast host.

“We have enough football. We have lots of international football, we have the Nations League, we’ve diluted everything in football then someone comes up with an idea and said ‘we’ll throw this in then’."
