Jose Mourinho reveals how Luke Shaw’s horror leg break in 2015 meant England star was ‘not ready’ to work with him at Manchester United

Jose Mourinho has suggested that Luke Shaw's horror leg break in 2015 resulted in the left-back not being ready to work with him during his spell in charge of Manchester United.
Shaw is a starter for England during their Euro 2020 clash against Scotland at Wembley, something that would have seemed impossible during Mourinho's reign at Old Trafford.
He and the player had what seemed to be a difficult relationship at the time with the Portuguese publicly criticising Shaw on multiple occasions for his performances.
Shaw has made excellent progress in recent seasons and although this has come under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's management, Mourinho's tough love has since been credited by some as the reason for his rise.
Mourinho joined the Red Devils in the summer of 2016 when Shaw was recovering from the horror injury sustained in a Champions League clash at PSV Eindhoven September 2015 - an injury that almost made him lose his leg.
And he suggested the psychological impact of that injury that meant Shaw was 'not ready' to work with Mourinho, who admits he pushes his players to the limit.
Mourinho told talkSPORT: "I would happy if I helped him in some way, even if it was an inch.
"I found a boy. I found a boy after an incredible injury that risked his career, I found a boy with some fears, some emotional scars coming from that awful night in Eindhoven.
"To work with me in a club where I was trying to improve mentalities, I was trying to make ambition, responsibility, to grow up and it was not easy for him.
"I have to admit that I push players to the limit and sometimes players are not ready to follow me in that mentality.
"We had good periods, he's a player with lots of talent. I think that's one of the reasons why he's playing."
