Leicester defender Wesley Fofana was left with a shocking leg injury after a reckless tackle from Villarreal's Fernando Nino during a pre-season friendly.

The 20-year-old defender has posted a message from his hospital bed, with the player now set for a lengthy lay-off after an ugly challenge which the Foxes have confirmed left Fofana with a broken bone.

With the Foxes 3-0 up in a meaningless match at the King Power, Nino came sliding in from behind and left Fofana in agony with a fierce scissor tackle.

Replays showed the Frenchman's foot pointing at an unnatural angle, with teammates looking on concerned for the young star.

After lengthy treatment, Fofana was carried off on a stretcher and replaced by Ben Nelson, before Leicester went on to win 3-2.

And the player later confirmed via social media he has suffered a fractured fibula.

The 20-year-old posted a positive message on his Instagram, thanking Leicester's 'wonderful medical team' and vowing to fans he will come back stronger.

The former Saint-Etienne star was named the Foxes' Young Player of the Season last term after a stunning breakthrough campaign in the Premier League, making 38 appearances as he helped Leicester finished fifth in the league and won the FA Cup for the first time in their history.

Having joined Leicester for £36.5million in October 2020, Fofana wasted no time emerging as one of the league's best defenders and big things are expected in the years to come.

But his injury is a massive blow to Brendan Rodgers' plans for the season, with his side set to place Manchester City in the Community Shield curtain raiser at Wembley Stadium on Saturday.

Everyone at talkSPORT wishes him a speedy recovery.
