Adam Armstrong has completed a £15million move to Southampton, the Premier League side have confirmed.

Armstrong, who scored 29 goals for Rovers last season, has joined the south coast side on a four-year deal.

On the move, Armstrong said: “It’s unbelievable to be here – such a massive club with a great fanbase and it’s just something that I’m really looking forward to.

“I thought it was perfect as my next step. I wanted to get back to the Premier League from what I’ve done for Blackburn, so I’m over the moon.”

Saints were on the lookout for a new striker after Danny Ings joined Aston Villa for £30m last week.

And they have now found one in Armstrong, who has been one of the most prolific strikers outside of the Premier League in recent seasons.

The former Newcastle United starlet scored 20 goals in 40 matches while on loan at Coventry in the 2015/16 season.

Loan spells at Barnsley and Bolton followed before joining Blackburn on loan in January 2018, with Rovers made the deal permanent that summer for around £1.75m.

The Magpies will benefit from the transfer as they are in line to receive as much as 40 per cent of Blackburn’s fee owing to a sell-on clause they inserted into the deal three years ago.

The 24-year-old has since racked up 64 goals and 19 assists in 160 appearances for the Ewood Park outfit.

Armstrong is Saints' sixth signing of the summer, with Theo Walcott, Romain Perraud, Tino Livramento, Dynel Simeu and Armando Broja.

Meanwhile, Republic of Ireland forward Michael Obafemi is set to head in the opposite direction in a £6million move.

The transfer will be viewed as quite the coup for the Championship side, with Obafemi's current deal set to expire at the end of the 2021/22 campaign.

Saints also have their eye on Liverpool midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, ten years on from when he left the south coast to join Arsenal.

talkSPORT understands Southampton are keen on taking him on loan and Liverpool are willing to listen to offers for the 27-year-old.

As well as Ings, Southampton have said goodbye to six other players during this window, including former captain Ryan Bertrand.

Ralph Hasenhuttl's side get their 2021/22 Premier League campaign under way with a trip to Everton on Saturday, a match you can listen to LIVE on talkSPORT 2, kick-off 3pm.
