David Moyes has sent a stark warning to big-spending English clubs about splashing the cash in the current climate in light of Barcelona and Inter Milan's continued financial woes.

The Catalan giants are in complete freefall having been forced to effectively release Lionel Messi from his contract owing to 'economic and structural obstacles'.

Barcelona were unable to meet La Liga’s spending limits, despite insisting both player and club moved heaven and earth to strike a deal.

Inter, meanwhile, have already lost title-winning manager Antonio Conte and Achraf Hakimi to Paris Saint-Germain this summer with more departures expected imminently.

One of those is star striker Romelu Lukaku, who is set to be sold in a £97m deal to Chelsea, which will see the Belgian international return to Stamford Bridge seven years after leaving the club to join Everton for £28m.

Manchester City also splashed out a British record transfer fee to sign Jack Grealish in a blockbuster £100million deal from Aston Villa last week.

Meanwhile, arch nemesis Man United have forked out £114m to bring Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane to the club from Borussia Dortmund and Real Madrid respectively.

West Ham boss Moyes joined talkSPORT to outline his thoughts on those clubs who are continuing to spend big in these challenging times.

"The clubs can do whatever they want, but we're just out of the [coronavirus] pandemic," Moyes told White & Jordan.

"At the start of the pandemic we were talking about whether football clubs were going to survive and how where the lower league teams going to do it.

"I actually think there's been very little transfer [movement] in the Championship.

"There's been one or two big transfers taking place, but I don't think there's been lot of transfers [on the whole].

"But I think we've also got to be mindful that we're seeing so many football clubs in Spain and Italy finding it so difficult to cope and it's obviously because of spending which has not been correct.

"The excitement about transfer is a good thing for supporters, but I just remember a year or so ago how critical people were being of the money clubs had spent, what money was being offered for wages and what agents were taking from the deals.

"We've got to be careful because we've got a football pyramid that we don't want to collapse in any way."

Meanwhile, Moyes warned any clubs interested in signing his star players this summer: ‘They’re not for sale’.

There remains continued uncertainty around Declan Rice's future amid transfer links with his former side Chelsea, but a defiant Moyes insists the club's ‘£100m players’ aren’t going anywhere.

“We’ve got some players that we value at £100million and we won’t be selling them,” Moyes said in an exclusive interview with talkSPORT’s Jim White.

“That’s the way it is, you’re not going to get rid of your better players, you don’t do it. And if you are then it’s going to be for huge money.

“So from that point of view I think the clubs are right to do so. But I think there are an awful lot of other clubs that are probably not able to pay that money and look to those levels."
