Harry Kane was not involved.

The England captain, who has been heavily linked with a move to City this summer, only had two training sessions with the first team following his late return from holiday.

As a result, it was decided that he wasn't fit enough to even take a place on the bench.

Regardless, City fans in the away end attempted to recruit him with one banner reading: 'Kane, come to City to ease your pain.'

By the end of the game though, a chant of, "Are you watching Harry Kane? rung out around the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

An entertaining first half ended goalless.

City spurned some early chances through Fernandinho and Joao Cancelo before Spurs battled their way back into the game.

They looked dangerous on the break and Son had the best of their efforts, twice seeing shots blocked.

Tottenham made the breakthrough in the 55th minute and it was Son who did the damage.

A quick break from Bergwijn ended with Son cutting inside and curling a shot into the far corner.

City regained the ascendancy later on in the game, but could not find an equaliser.

Jack Grealish fired a shot at Hugo Lloris in what was the best chance of the half for Pep Guardiola's men.

On the whole though, they struggled to carve out clear-cut opportunities.

When the final whistle blew, a huge roar was heard around the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium with fans no doubt singing, 'Are you watching Harry Kane?' long into the night.
