That guy who smashed PSG's opener against Man City into the top corner, we've seen him before.

At first we thought it might be Idrissa Gueye, but it simply couldn't be.

The midfield destroyer who used to play for Everton?

The tough tackler who got sent off for a horrible challenge on Ilkay Gundogan last time Man City came to Paris?

Surely not. Well, turns out it was him - and the player we once knew has turned into an absolute goal machine.

We probably shouldn't be surprised the Senegal international has four goals already this season, given the way in which his strike against City was dispatched into the top corner of the top corner during PSG's 2-0 win.

Lionel Messi, who finally took some weight off Gueye's shoulders with a goal tonight, isn't the only prolific star to arrive in Paris this season, because Mauricio Pochettino has transformed his once-defensive midfielder.

With Kylian Mbappe charging down the right, Lionel Messi running towards the front post and Neymar peeling off, it brought a smile to everyone's face when Gueye was the unlikely man to smash it home.

Reacting on commentary, former City defender Danny Mills said: "Messi makes a darting run into the box, really clever run across the goalkeeper. That takes a couple of defenders away.

"Neymar comes away from goal into space, he was looking to get a shot away but it’s an air shot.

"Gueye dispatches it into the top corner, incredible. It’s an absolutely incredible finish. Impossible to stop."

Why was he there? The 32-year-old spent more time in his own penalty box during his time at Everton.

In each of his three seasons on Merseyside, Gueye would rival N'Golo Kante at the top of the charts for tackling and intercepting, getting significantly less credit.

That side of his game was also on show tonight, as the midfielder disrupted numerous City attacks in dangerous areas before setting PSG on their way.

Destruction has always been his role, and he took it a little too far last time he faced City.

A horrendous challenge on Ilkay Gundogan saw him sent off as City came from behind to beat PSG 2-1 - and Gueye was subsequently suspended for the return leg as the French side went crashing out.

Messi will no doubt steal the headlines tonight and Gueye will go under the radar once more.

But Paris witnessed another man reborn tonight - and another story of redemption.
