Trevor Sinclair insists Manchester United got it wrong in the summer transfer window and their 5-0 defeat to Liverpool was no surprise.

The Red Devils suffered one of the most embarrassing days in their history, getting torn apart by their rivals in front of their own fans on Sunday.

Many have questioned Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's credentials as an elite manager, but former Man City and England winger Sinclair believes the problem lies in recruitment.

United re-signed Cristiano Ronaldo in the summer, despite a wealth of attacking talent already at the club, forcing Solskjaer to bench the likes of Edinson Cavani and Jadon Sancho.

Meanwhile, Raphael Varane was bought to improve the club's defence, but no improvements were made in the middle of the park.

United were linked with West Ham midfielder Declan Rice, but reportedly decided against paying his £100million price tag - which former Hammer Sinclair considers a mistake.

He told talkSPORT: "I want Rice to stay at West Ham, for me he's one of the best in the league at the moment.

"[N'Golo] Kante has got different strengths, but working with the ball, his passing range.

"He was playing against [Abdoulaye] Doucoure at Everton - and he had just ruined Manchester United. He [Rice] left him in his shadow. Doucoure could not get anywhere near him.

"It was one of the most thorough midfield performances I've seen in a long time - with the ball, without the ball, disciplined.

"He's 22. If Manchester United could've got someone like Rice in, I don't think we're having this conversation."

Sinclair also highlights the right-back position as a weakness that United failed to address, questioning Aaron Wan-Bissaka and asking why the club failed to sign Kieran Trippier from Atletico Madrid.

"I don't want to put Aaron Wan-Bissaka down, but when you're playing for Manchester United, you got to be best in class," Sinclair added.

"He's a good defender in one-on-one situations, we all understand that. But you have to have more than than playing for Manchester United.

"Going forward, his end product has not been good enough, his creativity has not been good enough.

"If you look at him next to Manchester City's full-backs, Cancelo and Kyle Walker, come on!

"Kieran Trippier was rumoured, I think the price was a little bit hefty, but if you want to compete, that was one position they certainly needed."

Sinclair continued: "For me, the summer is what is killing Solskjaer at the moment, and I actually anticipated this. This is what I expected.

"When you get to levels where you're playing against six-time Champions League winners, recent Premier League winners, and the level of threat that Liverpool have - most people who understand the game are not surprised by this result."
