West Ham co-owner David Gold revealed how David Moyes received a guard of honour after his side beat Liverpool to go third in the Premier League on Sunday.

Life is pretty good for Hammers fans at the moment. Not only are they just three points off league leaders Chelsea, they have dumped Manchester United and Man City out of the Carabao Cup.

Moyes’ side also top their Europa League group and look likely to qualify for the knockout stages.

Sunday’s 3-2 victory over the formidable Liverpool was a special moment, with the London Stadium rocking.

There certainly would have been many proud West Ham fans heading to work on Monday morning, and Gold was one of them.

“It was fantastic, especially having beaten Manchester United, then we beat Manchester City and we are beginning to think we are a top side,” Gold said in an exclusive interview with talkSPORT host Jim White.

“We are beginning to show that by then beating the mighty Liverpool, who we’ve looked up to all these years as a great club and we beat them. It was absolutely fantastic.”

When asked about the fans, Gold said: “They were just amazing. Situations like this need fans and it is great to see them back in stadiums after nearly a year without them.

“They did tell us how proud they were yesterday. It was just amazing. Extraordinary. I have to confess, I was thinking ‘can we get a draw out of this game’, particularly after the good run we’ve had.

“Then we scored very early, but to win the game in that fashion with the fans right behind us, I could feel the nervousness when they got back to 3-2, but the best fans in the division. Brilliant.

“For years and years and years I was a West Ham fan. I know the feeling when things aren’t going well and I understand why they [the fans] get very disappointed when things aren’t going right.

“We have to battle on and battle on until you get things right. It culminated in a victory against Liverpool yesterday.

“So happy after a long, tough couple of seasons that we’ve had at the London Stadium, but it all came good yesterday.”

Moyes has been quite brilliant as West Ham manager, building a brilliant squad and galvanising them into one of the best units in the Premier League.

The club signing him up to a three year contract in the summer looks like an incredibly smart piece of business.

And Gold revealed how he and the West Ham hierarchy showed their appreciation for the Scot after the superb victory over Jurgen Klopp's side.

“He [Moyes] is very easy to work with, proper person and certainly one of the best managers I’ve worked with in my 27 years in football," said Gold.

“I’m so pleased for him as he’s worked so hard. He’s had his down days, but seeing him come into the boardroom after the victory yesterday was fantastic.

“He got a guard of honour as he walked into the boardroom. It was fantastic.”

Gold, along with his co-owner David Sullivan and vice-chairman Karren Brady, have come under plenty of fire from fans over the years for their running of the club.

Things are going from strength to strength at the moment and Gold had a message for those supporters.

He said: “I want to thank them for sticking with us. It has been tough times and it is all coming together. It is now the West Ham family and I love them to pieces.

“I’m so pleased they have stuck with us, it is brilliant.”
