Newcastle players are getting to used to a new manager in training and will be eager to impress.

Eddie Howe was named as Steve Bruce's replacement this week and has begun work in his first job since leaving Bournemouth in 2020.

The former Bournemouth manager has signed a contract until 2024, and becomes the first major deal for Newcastle since their takeover by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund.

Howe will now have the international break to work with his new squad as they attempt to escape the relegation zone, and his players will have to be on red alert for one of the 43-year-old’s pet hates.

talkSPORT pundit Jack Wilshere played for Howe at Bournemouth during the 2016/17 season, and quickly found out the one thing you can’t do in training.

, the pair spoke about how strict Fabio Capello was as England boss, not allowing players to wear shorts outside of training, or sit on balls.

“I’ve had a few managers like that,” Wilshere recalled. “Eddie Howe was like that, wouldn’t let you sit on a football.”

Asked why the rule was in place, Wilshere said: “I don’t know really, I remember my first day I sat on a ball and the lads were like ‘get up, get up, get up!’

“I was like, ‘why?’ and they were like, ‘you’re not allowed to!’”

Despite his first day awkwardness, Wilshere enjoyed his time under Howe, helping achieve the Cherries highest ever league finish of ninth place while on loan.

And the former Arsenal star has given his approval of the Premier League’s newest arrival, saying Howe has what it takes to turn Newcastle around.

“I worked with him at a club that I see now are quite similar to Newcastle – not in terms of the size of the club, but in terms of the players,” Wilshere said.

“Newcastle have got a few ex-Bournemouth players and that is what Eddie does, he gets the best out of those types of players, gets them going and he gets the fans on side.

“He’s a great manager.

“I think he deserves a chance. If he goes in and does really well, in a few years they could be pushing the top six, which I think he can do.

“When I played under him at Bournemouth we arguably had a worse squad and we finished ninth, so he can definitely do that.

“It’s down to him when he gets that chance to take them to the next level.”

Newcastle’s £305million Saudi-backed takeover reportedly makes the club the richest in the world, with Crown Prince Mohammad Bin Salman possessing a net worth of around £320billion.

The Magpies’ under-performing squad will need to impress if they want to stick around amid a new influx of new players, with Wilshere’s advice a sure-fire way to avoid upsetting their new boss early on.
