Manchester United are set for a fresh start under new management at Old Trafford with Ralf Rangnick's arrival.

The Red Devils have appointed the German as their interim manager until the end of the season following the sacking of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

The rest of the Norwegian's staff remained at United after his exit with Michael Carrick taking the reigns for the past two games.

The former England midfielder oversaw a 2-0 win over Villarreal in the Champions League before a 1-1 draw at Chelsea in the Premier League.

But what will his role be when Rangnick arrives and what will happen to the rest of Solskjaer's former staff? marvelbet369.com has all the details...

Who are Man United's backroom staff?

Mike Phelan

Phelan, who only signed a new contract extension until 2024 last month, was Solskjaer's first appointment as caretaker manager back in December 2008.

The former United midfielder, who was also an assistant for Sir Alex Ferguson, originally returned to the club as a first-team coach.

He has since moved to his current role as assistant manager in May 2019 and recently opened up on coaching at Carrington.

Phelan told last year: “There is a lot of tension, pressure, appreciation for what you’re doing.

“So to take that out on the training ground you need to be confident. You’re the guy they’re listening to. You must communicate those ideas across as quickly as you can and gain their trust.

“If you can’t deliver for the players, they quickly turn off. It’s important you’re ahead of the curve and always pressurising your players and yourself to do more. The game evolves all the time."

Michael Carrick

The former United and England international midfielder spent 12 years at Old Trafford as a player after signing from Tottenham in 2006.

Carrick made 464 appearances for the club before he was offered the chance to join then-United boss Jose Mourinho's set-up after retiring in 2018.

He continued to be part of the club's set-up following Solskjaer's arrival and took over as caretaker boss following the Norwegian's departure.

According to Carrick’s skill as a coach is in ‘spotting details’ and ‘influencing players with an arm-around-the-shoulder and a one-to-one chat’.

Kieran McKenna

McKenna had his career cut short by injury at just 23 and soon began coaching at Tottenham, before United recruited him as their Under 18s boss.

His impressive work with the club's youngsters impressed the hierarchy and he was subsequently promoted to Mourinho’s staff.

Solskjaer also opted to retain McKenna's services as assistant first-team coach like Carrick and he has been in his current role ever since.

The Athletic claimed that his approach can be 'schoolmasterly' at times which has drawn complaints from players when results begin to turn.

The report adds that McKenna's diligence and research in his work would stand him in good stead for managing in the Premier League but others doubt if he has the charisma to be the main man in the dugout.

Darren Fletcher

Another former United midfielder, Fletcher re-joined the Red Devils to coach the Under 16s in October 2020 after hanging up his boots.

He was quickly promoted to the first-team set-up, and Solskjaer publicly praised the ex-Scotland captain's footballing philosophy.

He then earned a second promotion in six months after he was appointed technical director in March.

Fletcher was handed responsibility for player development and oversees United's game alongside analysts rather than alongside the coaches in the dugout.

On his role, Solskjaer previously said: "(Fletcher) has fresh ideas as well as the Man United side of it. He’s been outside with different clubs.

"He has a bright eye for football, a really keen eye and lots of development with the youngsters.

"For me, now he can combine these two, a little less coaching, and have an influence on the recruitment.

"He can speak to players and sell Man United as the club he knows it is."

Will they be kept on by Rangnick?

Rangnick will reportedly speak to both Carrick and McKenna before deciding the make-up of his new-look United staff.

report the German will meet Solskjaer’s old coaches and assess them all before deciding whether they have a future under him.

Rangnick has a history developing coaches and United are hoping he has a good influence on Carrick and McKenna who are both highly rated at the club.

But the 63-year-old is already making efforts to form his own backroom team with Lars Kornetka expected to arrive as his new right-hand man.

In United's statement confirming Rangnick's appointment they said: "Michael Carrick will remain in charge of the first team until Ralf’s work visa is finalised."
