Ajax fired something of a warning shot to the likes of Newcastle as director of football Marc Overmars signed a contract extension.

Overmars, who enjoyed a fine playing career with the likes of Arsenal, Barcelona, Ajax and the Netherlands national team, was under contract with the Dutch giants until November 2024.

But the new deal sees him tied down until June 2026, warning off a number of clubs reportedly interested in getting him.

The announcement video posted by Ajax began with a phone ringing, which had multiple voice messages with people having different accents being left on it. The camera then pans to Overmars sipping on a glass of whisky as the extension news is then revealed.

Ajax's social media post announcing the news was captioned 'Stop calling Marc' with the phone and winking face emojis too.

This may have been done in a subtle dig to Newcastle, who were looking to pinch the Dutchman and make him their director of football after the Saudi takeover was completed.

Along with manager Erik ten Hag and chief executive Edwin van der Sar, Overmars has built another very strong Ajax team that is making waves in Europe.

They topped their Champions League group with six wins out of six, knocking out Borussia Dortmund in the process.

As for Newcastle, despite huge optimism about the club's ownership changing hands, the team are currently languishing in the relegation zone.

New manager Eddie Howe secured the club's first win of the season as they edged past Burnley last weekend, however, a tough run of fixtures awaits the Magpies this month.

Newcastle close out 2021 with successive matches against Leicester City, Liverpool, Man City, Manchester United and Everton.
