Manchester United's interim boss Ralf Rangnick hailed 'massive talent' Mason Greenwood to become a regular first-team star at Old Trafford.

And he's revealed how the 20-year-old homegrown star can follow Erling Haaland's example to become an even better player.

Greenwood has struggled for regular starts at Old Trafford under the care of former manager Ole Gunnar Solskjær and caretaker boss Michael Carrick.

But, starting as part of a much-changed team under Rangnick, the forward produced an impressive display against Young Boys in the Champions League where he notched a low-driving volley in their 1-1 draw at Old Trafford.

His performance and outstanding acrobatic finish were easily the highlight of an otherwise forgettable game, with the Red Devils already through to the last-16 draw ahead of the tie.

Former RB Leipzig and Red Bull Salzburg chief believes in nurturing homegrown talent, like Greenwood.

And, with a proven track record in helping to bring through world class players, Rangnick is keen to play a big part in his development this season.

"I think today he showed not only the quality because of that beautiful goal, but also the way that he set up the opportunity for Juan Mata was brilliant," said Rangnick after the game.

"He is a massive talent - left foot, right foot, good on the ball. Also the way that he set up the goal for Fred on Sunday, so it's about continuity.

"He has to develop physically but technically for his age he is a great player.

"My job is to develop him, to make an athlete out of him and if he manages to do that, he can be become a regular player for this club."

The German boss has previously helped to bring Erling Haaland through at Salzburg, where he was head of sport and development.

And while he stopped short of comparing the two young stars, he suggested one element of Greenwood's game where he can improve by following Haaland - to become a more physically powerful player.

"They are a different kind of striker," said Rangnick.

"Erling, for me, is a target striker, who can play as a single striker like a target man or together with another striker in a 4-4-2.

"I think Mason is more of a nine-and-a-half. He can play as a striker, he can also come from the wing, he can play together with another striker and he's very technical. Left foot, right foot.

"And as I said, sometimes he looks a bit not on an athletic level. I think we have to develop him there physically, but technically all the things that he can do with the ball are outstanding.

"So, I am not so much worried about his technical level. We need to develop him physically and mentally to become the strongest version of himself.

"And if we manage to do that, he can become a regular player and a valuable player for our club in the future."

Greenwood will look to continue his development under Rangnick's stewardship when United travel to Norwich this weekend, live on talkSPORT.
