Championship round-up: Doncaster relegated after losing thriller against Portsmouth
Doncaster Rovers were relegated from the Championship after they lost 4-3 to Portsmouth at the Keepmoat Stadium.
Dean Saunders’ men put up a fight as they attempted to cling onto place in the second tier of English football but after leading their opponents twice, two late goals from Dave Kitson and Marko Futacs condemned them to League One football next year.
The result also means that Pompey live to fight another day but they sit seven points behind Bristol City with only three games to play.
Meanwhile Coventry City, who occupy the last relegation zone spot, drew 1-1 with Burnley thanks to Clive Platt’s goal which cancelled out Charlie Austin’s first half strike. They sit four points behind Bristol City.
The Robins lengthened their unbeaten run to five games as they drew 2-2 with promotion hopefuls Birmingham City. Stephen Pearson and Jon Stead had put them 2-0 up but goals from Marlon King and Nikola Zigic ensured the Blues won a point.
In Friday’s Championship match Reading beat Southampton 3-1 at St Mary’s the result puts them top of the league with three games to spare.
And West Ham kept themselves in the hunt for second place as they trounced Brighton 6-0 at Upton Park.
Ricardo Vaz Te scored a hat-trick with the other goals coming from Kevin Nolan, Carlton Cole and a Gary Dicker own-goal.
Leeds United kept their faint hopes of a play-off spot alive with a 4-1 win over Peterborough. Joe Newell had given Posh the lead but braces from Billy Paynter and Ross McCormack saw the Whites win at Elland Road.
Nigel Pearson’s Leicester City had their slim hopes of making the top six dented after Millwall beat them 2-1.
There were 1-0 wins for Cardiff City and Middlesbrough as they ran out victorious over Barnsley and Derby respectively.
Crystal Palace and Ipswich played out a 1-1 while the scoreline was the same between Watford and Hull.
And in the day’s other game Nottingham Forest and Blackpool played out a 0-0 draw at the City Ground.
