It's fair to say Sir Alex wasn't best pleased with referee Martin Atkinson's failure to send off Chelsea's David Luiz in last night's crucial top of the table tussle at the Bridge:
"That changes the game in the second half. These decisions change the game. If they keep getting decisions like tonight, it could change everything."
It's not the first time a big game has swung in favour of one side in dramatic fashion and now to help mark the launch of their new ‘Moments In Time’ campaign, 188SPORT have decided to challenge the talkSPORT team to pick out six of their favourite game changing moments from recent history.
And we love a challenge, so here goes...
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Teddy Sherringham substitutions: Champions League final, 1999
Bayern looked worthy winners of this one until the second-half introduction of United’s substitute strikers and the two goals they scored between them in the dying stages. Some of the German side’s players were so deflated after Solskjaer’s winner, referee Pierre Luigi Collina had to help them off the ground for the brief restart.
Steven Gerrard wonder goal: FA Cup final, 2006
Almost in response to the stadium announcement of four minutes added time, Steven Gerrard popped up with one of the FA Cup’s finest ever goals to deny West Ham a memorable 3-2 victory. It swung the tie back in Liverpool’s favour as the Reds went onto lift the trophy after a penalty shoot out.
Dennis Bergkamp penalty miss: FA Cup semi-final reply, 1999
The game is best remembered for the incredible solo winner from Ryan Giggs in extra-time but had Peter Schmeichal not saved Bergkamp’s late penalty in normal time, the Gunners would have made the final instead and United’s famous treble would have been a double at best.
Nemanja Vidic penalty decison: Carling Cup final, 2010
Aston Villa opened the scoring after five minutes when United’s Serbian centre-half brought down Gabriel Agbonlahor and Ashley Young tucked away the spot-kick. But the Villains were fuming that referee Phil Dowd failed to send Vidic off for preventing a clear goal-scoring opportunity. Instead he stayed on the pitch, escaping even a yellow card and the Red Devils went on to win the final 2-1.
Frank Lampard phantom goal: World Cup second round, 2010
Despite falling 2-0 down during a nightmare start in South Africa, Frank Lampard pulled the scores level moments after Matthew Upson bundled in England’s first. But the Chelsea midfielder’s ‘goal’ was never awarded – the speed of the ball as it crashed down from the crossbar into the goal and back out eluded the Uruguayan linesman, even though he was perfectly placed. At 2-2 who knows what would have happened - but it wouldn’t have ended 4-1 to Germany, either way.
Zinedine Zidane sending-off: World Cup final, 2006
He was the best player of his generation and possibly the greatest of all-time. But the French magician’s last professional game ended in controversy on the biggest possible stage. With ten minutes of extra-time to go until a world cup deciding penalty shoot-out, he floored Marco Materazzi with a head-butt when the Italian defender allegedly insulted his family. The Italians lifted the trophy on penalties and Zidane would never play professionally again.
