Maierhofer is shown the door at Wolves

Stefan Maierhofer is being released by Wolves after just one season at Molineux.

The Austrian international striker was signed for £1.8m from Rapid Vienna last summer, but made just one Premier League appearance for Mick McCarthy’s side last season.

Maierhofer had caught McCarthy’s eye, having netted 27 goals in 2008/09, but has failed to make an impact in England, his progress further hindered by hernia problems.

“Stefan is for sale,” confirmed McCarthy. “I tell the players if they can go and then I guess they tell their agents who go and drum up a bit of business - and get the business done.

“There is a bit of interest in Stefan from abroad.”

Maierhofer spent time on loan at Bristol City having recovered from his injury problems, but found himself behind Kevin Doyle, Sylvan Ebanks-Blake and Chris Iwelumo last season, while the arrival this summer of Steven Fletcher from Burnley has been the final nail in his Molineux coffin.
