Exclusive – Warnock: ‘England need a Redknapp-type manager’

QPR boss Neil Warnock has told talkSPORT England need to appoint a manager with better communication skills in order to get the best out of the team.

Fabio Capello has announced that he will stand down after Euro 2012 and Warnock thinks a fundamental factor in replacing the Italian is to get someone who has a good rapport with the players and can keep morale high within the camp.

He told Kick Off: “I think you need a Redknapp-type that can liaise with the people, get the best out of them and enjoy it. I don’t think there was any enjoyment in the lads playing in the World Cup.

I think it’s the tournaments where they’re away four or five weeks. You need humour around the camp. I think when you’re over-strict or you haven’t got the humour because you haven’t got the language I think it’s very difficult long-term.

“I think you can go away for three or four days, play one or two games and you wont have a problem.”

Warnock also criticised the FA’s decision to take the England squad away at the end of last season, adding: “I think the Austria trip was an absolute disaster. At the end of a long season to go to Austria, [the players] would have been better with their families.”
