Generational golf star Ludvig Aberg only turned pro in June but earns spot as Luke Donald makes Ryder Cup picks

Ludvig Aberg has earned a spot in Europe's Ryder Cup team as one of captain Luke Donald's six wildcard selections.

Despite only turning professional this summer, the Swedish star earned a dramatic final round win of 64 at the Omega European Masters over the weekend to bolster his hopes of being selected.

Now the 23-year-old will have the opportunity to show his qualities as Europe look to regain the Ryder Cup trophy at Marco Simone Golf and Country Club from September 29 to October 1.

Speaking after being selected, the Swedish starlet said: “First of all, thankyou so much. The last couple of months have been quite a lot, but it’s exciting and I can’t wait for Rome.

Asked if he expected the call from Donald, Aberg said: "Probably not!

“If you told me I'd be involved in these conversations I probably wouldn't have believed you!"

Explaining the decision, Donald said: “We obviously knew what he was doing in the college scene. You look at what he did in those four years and the only comparables really were Viktor Hovland and Jon Rahm. He is that good.

"I played with him in Detroit and was blown away by his game. He continued to impress and I challenged him to come over to Europe and play a couple (of events).

"He was fifth in the Czech Masters and you know what he did yesterday. It was like a walk in the park for him and for someone that is so inexperienced it was just so, so impressive."

Elsewhere Tommy Fleetwood, Sepp Straka, Justin Rose, Shane Lowry and Nicolai Hojgaard were also named in Donald's captain's picks.
