Fans notice Bryson DeChambeau stealing a look at US Open trophy while Rory McIlroy tries to catch Pinehurst leader

The man leading the US Open on the final day could not resist the temptation.

Bryson DeChambeau entered Sunday leading the field by three strokes and just 18 holes away from winning another major.

While most golfers had struggled with Pinehurst's fast course and faster greens, DeChambeau entered the final round having tamed one of the toughest courses in the world.

He sat at 7-under par before his Sunday started, while Rory McIlroy was at 4-under.

“I love the test that Pinehurst is presenting, and you’ve got to focus and concentrate on every single shot out there,” McIlroy said. “It’s what a US Open should be like. It’s obviously great to be in the mix.”

DeChambeau again was a fan favorite at the US Open, following up on his impressive runs at the Masters and PGA Championship.

He signed autographs with fans, snapped photos and took extra time to interact with a fanbase he rarely sees since he's normally part of the splinter LIV Tour.

Fans were reminded again why they're keen on DeChambeau's new humble personality as he approached the first tee on Sunday.

As the American golfer made his way toward the course, the US Open trophy stood nearby on a small podium.

Some golfers would have intentionally ignored the large, shining object in the attempt to fend off bad luck.

"There he is, DeChambeau," an announcer said. "The man of the moment."

Moving within a few feet of the trophy he was trying to win again -- DeChambeau claimed the US Open in 2020 -- he briefly paused to focus on the shining object.

"He takes a little look at that US Open trophy," the announcer said.

Fans noticed the same thing and continued to praise the hottest golfer in the sport.

"I enjoyed seeing him interviewed," one fan tweeted. "What a well spoken, interesting individual."

As DeChambeau prepared for his first hole, he had closer competition.

McIlroy pulled within two strokes after starting the final round 1-under.
