Justin Jefferson’s NFL career already at crossroads with Minnesota Vikings
Justin Jefferson's career with the Minnesota Vikings is already at a crossroads.
Jefferson, one of the best wide receivers in the NFL, has put up big numbers again at the start of the 2023 season.
But Minnesota is a backward 1-4, veteran quarterback Kirk Cousins isn't playing up to his contract, and a looming decision on a deal for Jefferson has complicated an already murky picture for the Vikings.
Jefferson was placed on injured reserve on Tuesday due to a strained right hamstring.
The three-time Pro Bowler and 2022 Offensive Player of the Year will miss at least the next four games.
Yet it's already being questioned whether Jefferson will return at all this year, since Minnesota has been one of the most disappointing teams in the NFL and the Vikings could already be staring at a lost season.

Cousins' uncertain future in Minnesota only further clouds the picture.
The four-time Pro Bowler has put up good numbers this season (67.2 completion percentage, 1,498 yards, 13 touchdowns, four interceptions).
But the Vikings, who have only won one game, have been dragged down by mental mistakes and maddening turnovers.
Cousins turned 35 in August while Jefferson is 24.
More than a decade separates the Minnesota duo.
The veteran QB and young star receiver appear to be on different career paths at a pivotal time for the Vikings, who went 13-4 last year but lost their only playoff game in a surprise NFC Wild Card defeat to the New York Giants.
Cousins' contract situation is open ended after this season.
Jefferson is still on his rookie deal and would be on an option year in 2024.
He's due for a huge raise moving forward but it's unclear whether Minnesota will be his long-term NFL home.
If Cousins and Minnesota continue to disappoint as a whole in 2023 and they're eliminated from the playoff picture, there's a chance that Jefferson sits out the remainder of the year, even when healthy.
Through 53 career games, the former LSU standout has 360 receptions, 5,396 receiving yards and 28 TDs.
Jefferson has recorded at least 1,400 yards in all three of his full pro seasons and rivals Ja'Marr Chase as the best young receiver in the sport.
Jefferson's talent is undeniable.
But he deserves to play for a winner if he stays in Minnesota.
