‘Detriment to the Cowboys’ – Why Jerry Jones stands in way of Dallas hiring Deion Sanders

Mike McCarthy's days leading the Dallas Cowboys appear to be numbered.

America's Team are enduring a historically bad season with a 3-7 record, no wins at home, and Dak Prescott on IR.

Expected to be a contender, the Cowboys are now in a race for the No. 1 pick in next year's NFL Draft.

That opens up the intriguing prospect of selecting two-way Colorado Buffaloes star Travis Hunter and pairing him with Deion Sanders.

The drumbeat is growing steadily louder for Coach Prime to rock up at AT&T Stadium.

But college football expert Jake Crain joined to reveal why he thinks the potential move will never happen.

"I think if Deion Sanders leaves Colorado, it won't be to stay in college. It will be to go to the NFL," he said.

"Because deep down, we can sit here and talk about how he's resurrected the Colorado program and what he did earlier at the HBCU, but Deion Sanders is an NFL guy. And I think he views himself as an NFL guy, and that is the highest level of football.

"We already know what he did as a player. So I would not be shocked at all if once his sons leave, we see Deion Sanders with a job in the NFL while his son, Sheduer, definitely plays."

"How does Jerry Jones not hire him? Mike McCarthy is gone. The dead man walking," asked co-host Brian T. Smith.

"Because Deion Sanders is a bigger name than he is. I think this is more about Jerry than it is anything else," explained Crain.

"We see this in politics all the time. I may not want to bring in the best vice president because they may overshadow me on the campaign trail.

"So you see the same thing with Jerry Jones. I think it's an ego thing, and it's a detriment to the Cowboys.

"So sitcom dad Mike McCarthy, he's probably on his way out. And again, I got a lot of respect for Mike and what he's done. But I don't think Jerry wants to bring in Prime because Prime is a bigger name than what Jerry is."

Jones declared that the Cowboys were 'all in' on a 2024 season which has been an epic bust.

But the owner insists McCarthy still has the backing of the locker room heading into Sunday's game against the division rival Washington Commanders.

"That losing the team stuff, that's so overblown," Jones said.

"These guys are so, first of all, they're natural competitors. Secondly, they're so proud of the fact that they are professional and disappointed in maybe the way they executed the play.

"Everybody's certainly disappointed, but that's a big difference in not knowing that you got to put the foot in front of the other to go."

McCarthy did not offer much by way of explanation after a humiliation against the Houston Texans.

"Explain it? I think it's very frustrating. It's frustrating for everybody. Frustrating for the players, frustrating for the coaches. I know it's disappointing for the fans," he said.

"But we just, we have a lot of moving parts going on, and we just have to be cleaner and more detailed in certain spots.

"We're not playing well enough, not executing well enough, coaching well enough to overcome some of the mistakes we're making in critical times of the game."
