‘I’m gonna cry’ – Peter Schrager leaves emotional Good Morning Football co-host inconsolable with major career announcement

Peter Schrager has confirmed he is leaving the NFL Network and Fox Sports.

The respected league insider and TV personality, who rose to prominence on Good Morning Football (GMFB), is expected to move to ESPN ahead of the 2025 season.

He confirmed the news as he opened Monday's GMFB, revealing that the show will be his last.

"I'd love to get back to the football, but if you didn't follow Andrew Marchand or Ryan Glasspiegel on Friday, the rumors are true," Schrager said.

"Today is my last day on Good Morning Football. I end with great feelings. We're gonna celebrate today.

"I love everyone on this show. It's all good, but this will be the last episode I will be on and with a heavy heart I'm stepping away.

"It's also for good reasons and for a bright future, and hopefully we'll all be crossing paths and we can talk about ball elsewhere."

Schrager's announcement did not confirm he is heading to ESPN, as has been widely reported by Front Office Sports and The Athletic, but it did leave his NFL Network co-hosts emotional.

Longtime co-host Kyle Brandt called the news a 'shock' and described his exit as 'a big deal'.

Manti Te'o, who joined GMFB last season, added: "When I heard the news on Friday, I told Jamie (Erdahl) I felt like a guard or a forward that got signed to the Dallas Mavericks and was looking forward to playing with Luka Doncic.

"And right when I get on the scene, he's gone.

"I'm over here trying to figure this thing out. We're really gonna miss you brother."

Alongside his appearances on NFL Network, Schrager also had a Super Bowl role with Fox, and was on the network’s weekly 11am pregame show during the regular season.

While a deal between the insider and ESPN had to yet to be finalized as of Friday, all indications appear to be that he’ll be landing with the network and leaving his previous roles.

According to both Marchand and Glasspiegel, if that indeed happens, Schrager is expected to contribute to a variety of ESPN programming.

Shows including Get Up, First Take and NFL Live were all mentioned in the initial reports.

If a deal is confirmed in time, it’s also possible that Schrager could work on ESPN’s upcoming coverage of the 2025 draft next month.

The network is preparing to broadcast its first two Super Bowls in 2027 and 2031, and has been on a hiring spree of late.

President of content Burke Magnus has brought across director Artie Kempner from Fox to serve as the new director of Monday Night Football.

He will be the third different director to work with ESPN's Joe Buck and Troy Aikman - regarded by many as the best in the booth.

The pair are entering the fourth season of their five-year contracts that are said to be worth a combined $165million.

Kempner has previously worked with Buck and Aikman, but had been Fox’s No. 2 NFL director, while being its lead on NASCAR.

Schrager wrapped his final GMFB appearance on Monday by thanking his current and former colleagues, as well as everybody who works behind the scenes.

His final goodbye also left host Jamie Erdahl in tears.

"I know you're not with us here in New York right now," he told her.

"You are in LA and that is a good segue to what I have to say to you. What you did this past year, at the hours that you are working in a new city with a new third child, if you didn't already have my utmost respect beforehand, you blew me away with how you dove into this."

The camera then cut to Erdahl, who began to cry.

"Don't show her, I'm going to cry. Don't show her," Schrager joked.

"With how you dove into this job and led this entire LA experiment… Jamie Erdahl, you are the leader of the show right now and you never have a bad attitude.

"This woman wakes up at 2am in the morning and has three children at home under the age of five, and she has become one of the faces of the NFL.

"I will tell you this, Jamie Erdahl, you deserve it all. You're going to go on to bigger and brighter and better things. As big as you want to be, you can be.

"But I have a feeling you're content just talking football, which is the best part about you. Your dreams are to make our show better and you did that every single day. I love you. I appreciate you."
