Fan footage of Ben Stokes’ Headingley Ashes heroics sees wild crowd and flying beers

What Ben Stokes achieved in the third test of the 2019 Ashes was nothing short of remarkable.

It seemed the test was over and Australia would be retaining the Ashes, but Stokes pulled England back from the brink to score the winning runs and send the crowd into a frenzy.

Fan footage shows the moment Stokes won the game and he immediately punched the air in celebration, as fellow batsman Jack Leach ran down from the other end to give him a big hug.

At the same time, England fans could not contain their excitement, as they jumped out of their seats and multiple beers flew into the air.

The test actually got off to a reasonably good start, with Jofra Archer taking six wickets, as England bowled out Australia for the relatively low score of 179.

But, unfortunately Joe Root's men could not capitalise as they were skittled out for a measly 67.

The Aussies then put up a score of 246 to lead by 358 runs and the match seemed all but over.

England, however, showed a never-say-die attitude, as Root and Joe Denly combined for a pair of half centuries and then in came miracle man Stokes.

With just one wicket remaining, Stokes ploughed on hitting boundary after boundary, while Leach put in a valiant effort to protect his wicket up the other end.

And eventually Stokes hit a four to drag England over the line and complete what at the time was their highest ever run chase in test match history.

Unfortunately, Australia would go on to win the next test and retain the Ashes, but England will be looking to take them back when the two sides meet on Friday for the first test of the 2023 Ashes series at Edgbaston.
