Root pleaded his innocence after being charged by the on-field umpires but match referee Andy Pycroft found him guilty in a hearing after play.

As a first Level One offender, Root will not be fined.

The officiating took centre stage on a day which saw England's total upgraded from 285 to 290 after Sri Lanka's Roshen Silva failed to ground his bat while running two.

But the day belonged to Sri Lanka as they surpassed England's total with a gutsy 336 to take a 46 run lead.

Silva's composed 85 was complimented by half-centuries from Dimuth Karunaratne (63) and Dhananjaya de Silva (59).
