Boris Becker to coach world number six Holger Rune but will be banned from Wimbledon

Boris Becker is back in tennis and will coach world number six Holger Rune, it has been confirmed.

The three-time Wimbledon champion served eight months in a UK prison having been convicted of hiding £2.5million worth of assets and loans in an attempt to avoid paying debts and was released in 2022.

The 55-year-old was then deported to his native Germany.

Becker, who has previously coached Novak Djokovic, is back in the sport that made him with sixth seed and Wimbledon quarter-finalist Rune, who was previously with Serena Williams’ former coach, Patrick Mouratoglou but parted ways after just six months in April.

"I can confirm that I am Holger Rune's coach," Becker told .

"It makes me a little proud that he asked me. The contact has existed for a long time. Now it was a very good fit.

"My calendar allows it and I have always been interested in Holger because he is on the tennis court with so much commitment and temperament.

"Holger then invited me to a training week in Monte Carlo. I also had a long chat there with his mother Aneke and his performance coach Lapo Becherini. The three of us are responsible for Holger from now on.”

Under the terms of Becker's licence, though, he will not be able to return to the UK until October 2024 at the earliest.

It means he will not be able to coach at next year's Wimbledon competition.

In May, Becker was spotted in Rome to watch the Italian Open where Rune lost in the final to Daniil Medvedev.

He will now begin work with Rune at the Swiss Indoors Basel, which begins on October 25 and brings a wealth of experience with six grand slam wins to his name.
